The Vedas contain references to a large number of therapies like sunrays therapy, air therapy or pranayama, fire therapy, water therapy, yagya therapy, arm-touch therapy etc. The relevant mantras are found in Rig Veda, Yajur Veda and Sam Veda. However, the discussion in the Atharva Veda regarding some therapies is more extensive.

The studies conducted by Padmshri Shri Kapildev Dwivedi has been published in the “Arogya Ank of Kalyan” published by Gita press, Gorakhpur. In this study, we find the methodology of Sunrays therapy discussed in the Vedas.

In the Vedas the Sun has been considered as the soul of the Universe, “Surya atma jagtastasthushashcha” mentioned in the Rig, Yajur, Sam and Atharvaveda. In the Prashnopanishad the Sun has been referred to as “Pranah Prajanam”. The Matsya Purana advises going to the Sun for a disease-free life. Therefore, our learned Rishis have given the emphasis on Sunrays therapy by devising the Surya Upasana, Surya Namaskar methods etc. for maintaining a disease-free life.

The rays of the rising Sun are considered most beneficial according to Atharvaveda. These rays have powers to heal all diseases. The rising Sun rays contain the infrared component in sufficient quantity which have high curative properties. The Rigveda also says that the rays of the rising Sun can cure all types of heart-related diseases, jaundice, anaemia etc. The Surya namaskar method is the means to get benefit from the morning Sunrays.

The Sunrays Therapy consists of standing or sitting in front of the rising sun for at least fifteen minutes the time can be increased or decreased depending upon the season and the requirements. The time can be safely increased to half an hour after which the Sunrays become strong and do not remain beneficial. Therefore, the morning Sunrays are most beneficial for Sun therapy.

In the Atharva Veda, a detailed discussion on Sunrays therapy is found in twenty-two mantras. These mantras contain a long list of diseases that can be cured by Sunrays. The list includes diseases like fevers of all types, jaundice, stomach illness, cough, cold, the diseases of the intestine, liver, lungs, bones, tuberculosis, spinal cord etc. The Atharvaveda says that to remain in the association of sunrays is like remaining in the association with Amrit.

The Sunrays therapy has been widely practised throughout the world. Some western healers like General Palijhan Honey, Dr Pancost, Dr Robert Bohland, Dr Edwin Babbitt are important names in this field. In India, the practice of Sunrays therapy was popularized by Shri Gobind Bapu Tongu and Dr Dwarkanath Naranga.

The Sunrays contain seven colours and these colours have been clearly mentioned in the Vedas. The Rig Veda and Atharva Veda refer to such seven colours. The colours are violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red (VIBGYOR). The Violet is stronger and all others become progressively weaker. The Ultraviolet is fatal and the infrared is soothing.

These rays have been divided into three families which are the main colours, red, yellow and blue. All the other colours are the mixtures of these three colours. The three families of colours for Sun therapy are fixed as: –

a) Family I – yellow, orange, red

b) Family II – green

c) Family III – violet, blue and indigo

For sunrays therapy three separate bottles are chosen for the three families and the bottles are filled with clean drinking water. The bottles must be of the colour represented by the family. Then the bottles are kept in the sunlight for six to eight hours. Waters in the bottle acquire the properties of the sun rays of a particular colour.
