The thyroid is a small gland, shaped like a butterfly, located in the lower part of the neck. The function of the gland is to secrete hormones. The main hormones released by the thyroid are triiodothyronine, abbreviated as T3. Triiodothyronine (T3) affects almost every physiological process in the body, including growth and development, metabolism, body temperature, and heart rate.

The other hormone is thyroxine, abbreviated as T4. Thyronine is a deiodinated form of thyroxine. The thyronines act on nearly every cell in the body. They act to increase the basal metabolic rate, affects protein synthesis. They help regulate long bone growth (synergy with growth hormone) and neural maturation and increase the body’s sensitivity to catecholamines (such as adrenaline) by permissiveness. These thyroid hormones deliver energy to cells of the body. (Wikipedia)

What Diseases and Conditions Affect the Thyroid?

The most common problems that develop in the thyroid include:

a) Hypothyroidism — An underactive thyroid.

b) Hyperthyroidism — An overactive thyroid.

c) Goiter — An enlarged thyroid.

d) Thyroid Nodules — Lumps in the thyroid gland.

e) Thyroid Cancer — Malignant thyroid nodules or tissue.

f) Thyroiditis — Inflammation of the thyroid.

A thyroid patient sees problems in all aspects of his life. The thyroid increases the risk of obesity and heart diseases, depression, anxiety, hair loss, and certain sexual problems. If undiagnosed, it affects the patient’s life severely and that too without the patient even realizing that the Thyroid is actually the root cause of many problems in his life.

As per Vedic astrology, the neck and throat region is seen from the second house and the second lord. Taurus is the lord of the second house in the horoscope of Kaal-Purusha (time-personified). Hence, affliction to the Taurus sign and Venus are both relevant. The lower neck region is also seen from the third house, third lord and from the Gemini sign. Therefore, analyses of the third house, third lord, Gemini sign and its lord Mercury is also necessary for making any judgment about the chance of having thyroid.

We have been researching the role of “Pitra Dosha” (ancestral curse) in increasing the prospect of this disease in the horoscope. “Pitra dosha” becomes relevant in the horoscope if there are afflictions to the natal Sun or natal Moon. The other important consideration is the affliction of the ninth house or its lord by malefic planets. Some astrological references like Lal-Kitab consider affliction of Jupiter or signs of Jupiter viz., Sagittarius and Pisces relevant to judge “Pitra Dosha”.

The example horoscope is of a female native who has been diagnosed with Thyroid.

Does the horoscope signify “Pitra Dosha” (ancestral problems):-

a) Mars, the ninth lord, is placed with arch-enemy Saturn. This combination is signifying “Pitra Dosha”.

b) Sun is afflicted by the conjunction of Rahu. The horoscope is suffering from “Pitra Dosha”.

Promises of having thyroid in the horoscope:-

a) The second lord representing the neck and throat region is Mars. In the horoscope, Mars is afflicted by conjunction with Saturn.

b) Taurus sign incidentally also happens to be the third sign in the horoscope. The lord of this sign Venus is placed in the Lagna. This Venus is afflicted by the aspect of afflicted Mars.

c) Venus, Mercury and Sun are afflicted by Saturn and Rahu / Ketu axis even in the Navmansa chart.

Does the horoscope signify cure:-

a) Exaltation of the third lord Venus is a good indication. The disease can get cured if proper medication or healing is done.

b) Placement of Jupiter in the second house is also a good indication. It signifies a speedy cure for this disease.

Analysis:

The native was diagnosed with Thyroid when the dasa of Ketu / Sun was operational. This indicates that “Pitra dosha” was directly involved in timing this disease. Therefore, if steps are taken to resolve “Pitra dosha” along with medication, healing will be fast.
