Sankatnashan Ganesh Stotram has been taken from Narad Puran which appears as a recitation by Devarishi Narad in the praise of Ganapati. Shri Ganesh is blessed with the right to get worshipped first during all auspicious occasions. Therefore, we are in the habit of beginning with Aum Shri Ganeshaya Namah which is the most popular mantra for us.

Sri Ganesh is Sankat Nashak (destroyer of obstacles, hazards, danger, distress etc.) for which he earned the name. He is the custodian of all knowledge and is the manifestation of intellect. However, he is worshipped more as the reliever from distress.

Devarishi Narad appears bowing to Ganpati who is first known as Gauriputra (son of Parvati). He is known by various other names and such twelve names have been narrated by Narad in the Stotram. The names have been explained below.

  1. Vakratunda – Having a curved trunk.
  2. Ekadanta – Having one tusk.
  3. Krishnapingaksham – Having reddish black eyes.
  4. Gajvaktra – The one with an elephant face.
  5. Lambodar – Having a large belly.
  6. Vikat – The one who is cruel towards his enemies.
  7. Vighnaraj – Destroyer of obstacles.
  8. Dhoomravarnam – Has a complexion of smoke.

  10. Vinayakam – The one being the supreme leader.
  11. Ganpati – Leader of Ganas.
