Devi Paath or Chandi Paath (Recitation of Verses) belonging to Sri Durga-Saptashati) continues every day during the nine days of Navaratri. The main book of recitation is the Sri Durga Saptashati which extends up to thirteen chapters containing seven hundred verses. It represents the main body of sacred mantras. However, there are groups of separate mantras which do not form parts of the thirteen chapters. They are known as the limbs of the main body and are recommended for inclusion in Durga Paath. They are known as.

  1. Devi Kavacham
  2. Argala Strotram
  3. Keelak Strotram
  4. Pradhanikam Rahashyam
  5. Vaikritikam Rahashyam
  6. Murti Rahashyam

All the mantras have been published along with other mantras of rituals in book form under the title Sri Durga Saptashati by Gita Press, Gorakhpur. Most of the materials have been extracted from the Devi Mahatmya section of the Markandeya Puran.

Devi Kavach is like Narayan Kavach or Ram Raksha Stotra but it is considered more powerful. It relates to the propitiation of female power represented by Mahashakti / Mahadevi who gets activated during the nine nights of Navaratra.

There may be a small number of non-believers in the powers of Shakti compared to a very large number of believers in her which gets reflected during the nine days/nights of Navaratra.

In Devi Kavacham the deity has been requested to provide armour to every organ of the human body selectively. The devotee requests for security from every direction and from all evil forces which act as enemies. The mantras are in Anushtup meter and its musical rendering is possible. The verses should be memorized and chanted to enhance self-confidence and the godly security provided by the Kavacham.
