Importance of Bhava Chart in Astrological Prediction

As the name implies, a Bhava chart is the natal chart that is obtained after the correction applied to Bhava Madhya (the Rising point of the ascendant in a natal chart).

It is presumed that each house is divided into 30 degrees. Now if exactly divided, then 0–30 would be Aries, 30–60 Taurus, 60–90 Gemini and so on till 330–360 Pisces. However, that is seldom true since the rising point in a chart is the degree to which the ascendant rises. Let us say that the ascendant rises in sign Aries at 5 Degrees. Then this value is taken to be the Bhava Madhya (The longitude of the Lagna is taken to be the midpoint of the first house). Now, the first house is not from 0-30 but spans over 350–20 degrees approximately. So forth, the corrections are made.

So, a planet in a Lagna chart at 352 degrees will be in the 12th house but it is essentially in the 1st house in the bhava chart. The Bhava chart is used to predict dasas and planetary influences.

To calculate bhava charts, we need two values – Ascendant and Midheaven. Ascendant is the sign rising in the eastern direction at the time of casting of the chart. The longitudinal position of Ascendant is the mid-point of the first house. Midheaven is the sign directly above the head. It is the midpoint of the tenth house. The steps to calculate midpoints of other houses are:

1. Total difference = Ascendant – Midheaven

2. Difference for one house = total difference divided by three

3. Mid-point of 11th house = midheaven + difference for one house

4. Mid-point of 12th house = mid-point of 11th house + difference for one house.

Similarly, calculate the midpoints of all the other houses to get the bhava chart. The starting point of a bhava is the mean of its and the previous house’s midpoint. Naturally, the endpoint of a house is the beginning of the next one.

The fundamental rules to keep in mind are these:

Bhava Chalit is about the bhava (houses) and Bhavesh (house lords). It is not about the planet. This is to say, if, for a Virgo ascendant, Jupiter is in the 7th house, but goes to the 6th house in Bhava Chalit. It can cause issues in marital life as Jupiter happens to be the lord of the seventh house. This placement can also cause health issues to the mother because Jupiter is also the fourth lord in the horoscope.

If for a Libra Ascendant, Saturn is in the 7th house but goes to the 6th house in the cusp, then:

a) Saturn, being the 4th and 5th lord in the 6th house creates difficulties for the mother, education etc. Mother is likely to suffer from health issues. There would be delays in the birth of children.

b) Saturn is still debilitated in Aries. Saturn in the sign of Aries is weak. If Saturn would have been in the 6th house and also the sign of Pisces instead of Aries, the negative result would have been less.

c) Saturn is in the 7th sign of Aries which has the cusp of the 6th house. Saturn will influence the characteristics of spouse and marriage.

d) Saturn (as a planet) will not influence the 6th house. No results of Saturn will be there on the 6th house. The only results visible would be of 4th and 5th lordships.

Other Important Aspects:

a) Vipreet raj yoga is valid in the Chalit chart as it is defined for houses, not signs.

b) Panch Mahapurusha yogas are defined for signs. It does not hold in Chalit Chart

c) Vimshottari Dasha is judged by 3 broad methods. Stick to one, don’t mix and match:

d) Karakatwas, mutual placement, sign/nakshatra placement, transits don’t hold in the Chalit chart.

e) For placement in houses, lordships and strength of planets Chalit chart is important.

f) A retrograde planet influences the previous sign, not the house. A retrograde planet is exactly where the Chalit chart calculates it to be, no changes need to be made. However, in the Rashi chart (sign chart), it can be considered to aspect the previous sign as well.

g) When applying a yoga, rule, calculation, etc. first try and decipher whether it has been designed for signs, transits, nakshatras, divisional charts or houses. h) If something is defined for houses, don’t apply it to signs or divisional charts. If something is defined for transits, don’t apply it to houses (e.g., ashtakavarga).
