How to Judge Mahadasha and Antardasa?

Categories : Astrology

Each planet has two types of nature. One is intrinsic or natural and, in this category, the malefic are Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu, Mercury (if associated with other malefic) and waning Moon. Some astrologers consider Sun as a natural malefic. But we can say only weak Sun, in reality, is malefic.

As per the ascendant sign, each planet in a birth chart behaves as per the house it owns. In a birth chart, the houses are sixth, eighth and twelfth houses (malefic houses). So, if the Mooltrikona sign of a planet falls in any of these three houses then the planet becomes a functional malefic for that birth chart irrespective of its intrinsic nature.

Note: As per ancient astrological texts Rahu and Ketu are not assigned lordship of any signs. But some astrologers consider Virgo as a sign of Rahu and Pisces as the sign of Ketu. There is also another viewpoint their signs of exaltation and debilitation so some consider Taurus as the exaltation sign of Rahu and Scorpio the exaltation sign of Ketu. Similarly, some consider Scorpio as a sign of exaltation of Ketu and Taurus as its sign of debilitation.

Any indication of probable disease, injury or general problems can take place only during the periods or Dashas of the problem causing planets.

How to Judge a Mahadasa?

In order to determine the exact nature of the Mahadasa, we need to analyse the state of the planet which governs the Mahadasa.

Follow the following steps:

a) See whether the Mahadasa lord is a functional malefic.

b) See if it is conjunct with a malefic or a benefic planet.

c) See where the Mahadasa lord is placed. Benefics give good results in a square (Kendra Bhavas) and trine houses (Trikona Bhavas) whereas the malefic planets give good results in square and in the third house and eleventh house.

d) See if it is in its own sign, exalted or debilitated, in friendly sign or in the sign of its enemy.

e) See if the planet which aspects the Mahadasa lord is in own sign, a sign of exaltation or debilitation or in friendly sign or in the sign of its enemy.

f) Analyse the position of the Mahadasa lord in the divisional charts which are called the Varga Kundalis.

How to Judge Antardasa?

In any Mahadasa the first antardasa is of the same planet and then in the same sequence as that for the Mahadasas but with smaller periods of time. Every computer-generated horoscope lists all the Mahadasa as well as their antardasas.

See the placement of the antardasa lord in the birth chart as well as in the divisional charts and notice the following points.

a) Placement in the 6th, 8th, or 12th house can bring troubles such as disease, accidents or hospitalisation etc. respectively.

b) Planets placed in the square and trine houses viz. 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th and 10th houses tend to give favourable results.

c) Any planet in a good position such as exaltation etc but in debilitation or bad position in the Navamsa Chart (D-9 chart) gives bad results and vice versa. Normally the condition of a planet in the Navamsa Chart overrules that in the Birth Chart.

d) Also see the relation of the Nakshatra lords of the planets governing the Mahadasa and the antardasa. Planets falling under the Nakshatras of malefic planets tend to give negative results.

e) If the antardasa lord is placed at 6th, 8th, or 12th position with respect to the Mahadasa lord in the birth chart then bad results can be expected.
