Aditya Hridayam Stotram was composed by Rishi Agastya on the occasion of the battle between Ram and Ravan on the battlefield of Lanka. The mantra has been composed for praying and propitiating Surya Deva.

The first round of Ram-Ravan Yuddha had already ended. Ram seemed dis-energized and exhausted after the conclusion of the first round. However, Ravan was prepared for the second round. In this situation, Rishi Agastya recommended to Ram the recitation of Aditya Hridayam Stotram for getting re-energized, revitalized and re-invigorated before the commencement of the second round of battle.

The Stotra is important because it explains the various names of Surya Deva. It is recommended for devotional Surya Puja.
